The Government of Ghana has officially launched a Dual Citizenship Drive aimed at members of the historical African diaspora, offering a renewed pathway to formally reconnect with the homeland and re-establish ancestral ties.
This initiative reflects Ghana’s continued commitment to diaspora engagement, identity restoration, and long-term inclusion of descendants of Africans displaced through the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
Application Window
Members of the historical African diaspora may apply during the in-person submission period from February 2–6, 2026, between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., at the World Trade Center, Accra.
About the Dual Citizenship Drive
The Dual Citizenship Drive is a government-led initiative designed to provide structured and dignified pathways for eligible members of the African diaspora to obtain Ghanaian dual citizenship. It recognizes both ancestral lineage and demonstrated ties to Ghana as central to the application process.
Applicants will undergo a documentation review, vetting, and orientation process prior to formal induction.
Required Documents & Fees
Applicants are required to submit the following:
- Completed Citizenship Application Form
- Birth Certificate
- Bio-data page of a valid passport
- Proof of Legal Residence in Ghana (minimum two-year residence permit)
- Police Clearance / Criminal Records Certificate from both home country and Ghana
- Evidence of Strong Ties to Ghana
- Proof of DNA to support Ghanaian descent
- Citizenship application fee: GH₵25,000.00
Process Overview
- Initial Submission (Feb 2–6, 2026)
- Submission of required documents
- Payment of GH₵1,500.00 administrative fee
- Location: World Trade Center, Accra
- Shortlisting & Online Application
- Shortlisted applicants will be notified
- Completion and submission of online application forms
- Vetting & Final Payment
- Payment of GH₵25,000.00 citizenship application fee
- Completion of vetting and background checks
- Citizenship Orientation
- Orientation with the Diaspora Affairs Office upon approval
- Citizenship Induction Ceremony
- Scheduled for March 5, 2026
- Presided over by H.E. President John Dramani Mahama
Important Notes for Applicants
- Inclusion on the interest or submission list does not guarantee approval.
- Applicants are considered for the first citizenship ceremony of the year only if:
- All eligibility and documentation requirements are met, and
- Full government fees are paid.
- Due to quota limits per ceremony:
- Applicants not selected in this first round, or
- Applicants approved after quotas are reached
will be deferred to the next available ceremony
