If you are planning to relocate to Ghana, whether short-term or long-term, one of the first questions that comes up during travel planning is: “Do I need to book a return flight ticket?” The answer isn’t always straightforward, and it often depends on your visa type, travel intentions, and how immigration officials interpret your plans at the point of entry.
At the African Diaspora Resource Centre, we’ve supported countless returnees and travelers making the journey home. Here’s what you need to know.
What Immigrations Officials Typically Expect
When entering Ghana, Immigrations authorities generally expect travelers to show proof of onward travel, which usually means a return flight ticket or an itinerary showing that you plan to leave the country within the limits of your visa duration.
This requirement is particularly important for:
- Tourist visa holders
- Visa-free travelers from ECOWAS countries or nations with visa waivers
- Short-term business visitors
Why? Because border officials want to confirm that you’re not intending to overstay your permitted time in the country.
Planning to Relocate? Here’s the Reality
If you’re relocating permanently or long-term, purchasing a return ticket may feel unnecessary. But from a travel and immigration standpoint, not having one can raise red flags—especially during check-in at your departure airport.
Airlines have the right to deny boarding if you do not have proof of return or onward travel, particularly if your visa or entry policy doesn’t explicitly support long-term stays.
Smart Workarounds
Here are some practical solutions many returnees use:
- Book a flexible or refundable return flight ticket. This gives you peace of mind during your travels and provides the option to change or cancel the return leg later.
- Use a third-party onward ticket service. These platforms allow you to temporarily “rent” a verifiable onward flight itinerary for 24-72 hours for a small fee—just enough to satisfy airline and immigration requirements.
- Apply for a residence or work visa in advance. If you arrive in Ghana with long-term status already approved, the need for a return ticket becomes less of a concern.
Our Recommendation
If you’re not holding a Ghanaian passport, residence permit, or long-term visa, it is safest to travel with proof of onward travel. Even if your plan is to settle permanently, being prepared avoids unnecessary delays or issues at the airport.
