Ghana Approves E-Visa System

Ghana is taking a major step toward modernizing its immigration process. The Government of Ghana has officially approved the introduction of an electronic visa (e-visa) system, with a scheduled rollout beginning May 25, 2026.

This shift marks a significant move toward making travel to Ghana more accessible, efficient, and aligned with global digital standards.

What Is the Ghana E-Visa?

The e-visa is a fully digital visa application process, allowing travelers to apply for entry into Ghana online—without the need to visit an embassy or consulate in person.

Once implemented, applicants will be able to:

Complete visa applications online

Upload required documents digitally

Receive approval electronically before travel

This system is expected to reduce processing times and simplify entry procedures for international travelers.

Why This Matters

For years, travelers to Ghana have relied on traditional visa applications through embassies or, in some cases, Visa on Arrival (VOA) services. While VOA has served as a flexible option, it often comes with:

Uncertainty around approval timelines

Long queues upon arrival

Limited accessibility depending on travel timelines

The introduction of the e-visa system is designed to bridge these gaps, offering a more predictable and streamlined process.

Impact on the African Diaspora

For members of the African diaspora exploring travel, relocation, or reconnection to Ghana, this update is especially meaningful.

A digital visa pathway:

Removes barriers tied to embassy access in certain regions

Simplifies planning for short visits or exploratory trips

Supports smoother entry for those beginning their relocation journey

This aligns with Ghana’s broader efforts to position itself as a welcoming destination for diaspora returnees.

What Travelers Should Expect

As the system rolls out on May 25, 2026, travelers should be prepared for a transition period. During this time:

Existing visa processes (including embassy applications and VOA) may still operate alongside the new system

Application guidelines and official portals will be announced and refined

Processing timelines may evolve as the system stabilizes

It is important to rely on verified sources and ensure applications are submitted through official channels once live.

A Step Toward Seamless Entry

The approval of Ghana’s e-visa system represents more than just a technological upgrade—it signals a broader commitment to ease of access, global connectivity, and diaspora engagement.

As Ghana continues to strengthen its position as a gateway to the continent, initiatives like this make it easier than ever to take the first step.

Planning Your Travel to Ghana?

Whether you’re visiting, exploring relocation, or preparing for a long-term move, having the right guidance is key.

At African Diaspora Resource Centre (ADRC), we support you through every stage of your journey—from visa pathways to settling into life in Ghana.

Have questions about traveling or relocating to Ghana?

Schedule a free needs assessment with our team and secure your pathway home.

Diaspora Pathways Home

For many members of the African diaspora, traveling to Ghana is more than a visit — it is a return.

Across the world, descendants of Africans displaced during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade are reconnecting with their heritage and exploring the possibility of living on the continent. Ghana has emerged as one of the leading destinations for diaspora returnees seeking cultural reconnection, community, and long-term settlement.

While Ghanaian citizenship is not automatically granted to diaspora visitors, individuals who establish strong ties to the country may eventually become eligible through legal citizenship pathways.

Below is an overview of how the journey typically unfolds.

Step 1: Visit Ghana and Reconnect with Your Roots

For most diaspora returnees, the journey begins with a visit to Ghana.

Many people start by spending time in the country through:

Repatriation & Heritage tours

Relocation Exploratory Visits

Cultural Immersion Programs

Extended stays to experience everyday life

These experiences often serve as the foundation for deciding whether Ghana may become a long-term home.

Step 2: Establish Legal Residency in Ghana

Individuals who decide to remain in Ghana longer term must establish legal residency.

This is typically done by obtaining:

A Residence Permit, or

A Work Permit (Companies / NGOs), and

Dependent Residency for spouse/children

Legal residency allows you to remain in Ghana for extended periods and begin building meaningful ties to the country.

For many diaspora returnees, this is the most important step toward long-term settlement.

Step 3: Demonstrate Strong Ties to Ghana

Citizenship eligibility is not based on ancestry alone. Applicants must demonstrate a genuine connection and commitment to Ghana.

Examples of strong ties to Ghana may include:

Living in Ghana as a legal resident

Learning or understanding a Ghanaian language

Operating a business or working in Ghana

Engaging in cultural or heritage initiatives

Making investments in land or property

These factors help show that your connection to Ghana goes beyond tourism and reflects a meaningful return to the continent.

Step 4: Explore Citizenship Eligibility

After living in Ghana and establishing strong ties, individuals may explore eligibility for Ghanaian citizenship through naturalization or special diaspora pathways.

While timelines can vary, members of the historical African diaspora should generally expect to maintain legal residency in Ghana for at least 2 years before applying for citizenship consideration through special Citizenship Drives recognizing their reconnection to the country.

Does Ghana Allow Dual Citizenship?

Yes. Ghana allows dual citizenship.

This means individuals who obtain Ghanaian citizenship are generally able to retain their original nationality, provided that their home country also allows dual citizenship.

In Ghana, individuals who obtain another nationality or become Ghanaian citizens while holding another passport must register their second citizenship and obtain a Dual Citizenship Certificate issued by the Government of Ghana.

Confirming Dual Citizenship Policy with your Home Country

However, before pursuing dual citizenship, it is important to check the laws of your home country. Some countries do not permit dual citizenship, while others may allow it but require certain actions to maintain both nationalities.

For example, some countries may require you to:

Declare or register your second citizenship

Maintain a valid passport from your home country

Notify government authorities when another citizenship is acquired

Meet tax or residency obligations tied to citizenship status

If your home country does not allow dual citizenship, acquiring another nationality may result in automatic loss of your original citizenship.

Before proceeding, it is advisable to review the citizenship policies of both Ghana and your home country to ensure you understand any requirements for maintaining dual nationality.

Ghana and the Return of the African Diaspora

Over the past decade, Ghana has intentionally created opportunities to welcome the African diaspora back to the continent. Initiatives such as Year of Return and ongoing diaspora engagement programs have encouraged thousands of returnees to reconnect with their heritage and establish roots in Ghana.

For many, the journey begins with a visit — but evolves into a long-term commitment to living, investing, and building community in Ghana.

Start Your Relocation Journey to Ghana

If you are part of the African diaspora exploring the possibility of living in Ghana, understanding the steps toward residency and citizenship is an important first step.

At African Diaspora Resource Centre (ADRC), we assist diaspora returnees with:

Relocation Planning

Bank Account, Ghana Card, SIM Cards

Residence & Work Permits

Transitional Housing

Cultural Orientation Training

Business Establishment

Our goal is to help members of the diaspora transition smoothly into life in Ghana while building the strong ties that support long-term settlement.

Get Started

Ready to start your journey towards reintegration & citizenship in Ghana? Answer a few basic questions, and we will outline the next steps that you need to take to meet eligibility requirements for the next ceremony.

Diaspora Citizenship Ceremony

On March 9, 2026 Ghana welcomed 150 members of the historic African diaspora as new citizens during a special citizenship ceremony held as part of the country’s ongoing commitment to reconnecting with descendants of Africans displaced through the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.

The ceremony marked another milestone in Ghana’s efforts to strengthen ties with the diaspora and support pathways for return.

A Moment of Homecoming

For many of the recipients, the ceremony represented more than a legal process. It symbolized a long-awaited reconnection to ancestral land and heritage.

The individuals granted citizenship are descendants of Africans who were taken from the continent centuries ago. Their return to Ghana reflects a broader movement among diaspora communities seeking cultural reconnection, belonging, and long-term engagement with the African continent.

Becoming a Ghanaian citizen provides them with the opportunity to live, work, invest, and fully participate in national life.

Government Reaffirms Commitment to Diaspora Return

The Government of Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating diaspora return through continued citizenship initiatives and policy efforts designed specifically for the historic African diaspora.

Officials emphasized that Ghana remains dedicated to strengthening connections with diaspora communities and creating pathways that make it easier for those seeking to reconnect with the continent.

This renewed commitment includes plans to:

Continue regular citizenship drives for eligible members of the historic African diaspora

Expand initiatives that support cultural reconnection and long-term settlement

Explore streamlined programs and processes to facilitate diaspora return

These efforts reflect Ghana’s broader vision of positioning itself as a welcoming destination for members of the African diaspora seeking to reconnect with their ancestral homeland.

A Growing Movement

The citizenship ceremony is part of a larger movement that has gained momentum in recent years as more members of the African diaspora explore the possibility of returning to Africa.

Initiatives such as the Year of Return and Beyond the Return have helped spotlight Ghana as a leading destination for diaspora engagement, investment, and cultural reconnection.

As interest in relocation, cultural exploration, and ancestral reconnection continues to grow, Ghana’s citizenship initiatives are becoming an important component of that journey.

Looking Ahead

With the government signaling its intention to maintain regular citizenship drives and improve access for historical diasporans, many expect the number of diaspora receiving Ghanaian citizenship to continue growing in the coming years.

For many in the diaspora, these developments represent a meaningful step toward rebuilding connections that were disrupted generations ago.

As more people seek to explore their roots, Ghana continues to position itself as a place where members of the African diaspora can reconnect, contribute, and call home once again.

Start Your Citizenship Journey

For many members of the African diaspora, obtaining Ghanaian citizenship is a powerful step toward fully reconnecting with the continent. Preparing for that journey, however, requires understanding eligibility, documentation requirements, and the pathways available.

Ghana Citizenship Drive Resumed

Key Updates, What’s Changed, and What Applicants Should Know

The Government of Ghana has officially resumed the citizenship process for members of the Historic African Diaspora, following a temporary pause and extensive consultations with diaspora stakeholders.

This resumption reflects important adjustments to the process, informed by feedback from diaspora communities, advocacy organizations, and public dialogue. Below is a detailed overview of the updated guidelines, what has changed, and what applicants should expect moving forward.

Why the Process Was Paused

Upon the initial launch of the Diaspora Citizenship Drive, concerns were raised by members of the historical African diaspora regarding several aspects of the initial rollout, including:

High upfront application costs

DNA testing requirements to prove Ghanaian ancestry

Short notice periods to complete applications

Multiple background check requirements across jurisdictions

Diaspora organizations convened discussions and town halls to collectively raise these concerns. In response, the Government of Ghana paused the process to review and reassess the framework.

What Has Changed

The resumed process includes several significant improvements:

DNA testing is no longer required

The initial application fee has been removed

The process now places emphasis on documentation, ties to Ghana, and eligibility review

A service fee is only required upon acceptance, not at the point of application

These changes represent a more accessible and practical pathway for members of the Historic African Diaspora seeking Ghanaian citizenship.

Updated Application Process

Submit the below documents directly to the WEB DuBois Centre, Cantonments, Accra – Ghana, for vetting:

Proof of legal residence in Ghana (2 year residence permit)

Birth certificate

Evidence of strong ties to Ghana

Police clearance from both the home country and Ghana

Bio-data page of a valid passport

Passport picture

If selected to proceed after the vetting process, applicants will then be instructed to complete the formal application and make payment online through the Ministry of the Interior portal.

Upon selection: Visit the Ministry of the Interior e-services portal to submit your registration and make payment of the application fee of GHS 25,000. Scroll past the Migration Services section until you see Other Services. Click on Diaspora Registration and proceed to Sign Up for an account and complete the registration process.

Due to the high volume of interest and the limited timeline ahead of the ceremonial swearing-in scheduled for March 5, 2026, not all applicants may be accommodated in the first ceremony. Authorities have confirmed that the process remains open and that eligible applicants not included in the first round will be considered in subsequent phases.

ADRC Support for Applicants

For applicants who need assistance meeting eligibility requirements, African Diaspora Resource Centre can provide assistance with the following:

Legal Residency in Ghana: Secure your Residence Permit or Work Permit in Ghana and position yourself to meet legal residency requirements ahead of future citizenship ceremonies. Schedule a free needs assessment with a Resource Specialist to explore the most suitable pathway toward lawful residency in Ghana.

International Police Report: Obtain a background check from your home country to meet application requirements. A streamlined process is available for U.S. citizens, with support also available for other nationalities, subject to jurisdiction and processing timelines.

A Step Forward for Diaspora Reconnection

The resumption of this program—along with the removal of DNA requirements and upfront application fees—marks an important step toward a more inclusive and dignified pathway for members of the African diaspora seeking citizenship and deeper connection to Ghana.

ADRC will continue to monitor developments, advocate for diaspora interests, and share verified updates as the process evolves.

Ghana is more than a destination—it’s an experience. From the bustling streets of Accra to the serene beaches of Cape Coast and the historic castles that whisper stories of resilience, Ghana offers a rich blend of history, tradition, and modern vibrancy. Yet for many visitors, returnees, or expatriates, truly enjoying Ghana goes beyond sightseeing. It lies in understanding the culture that shapes everyday life.

Why Cultural Orientation Matters

Landing in a new country can be exciting, but it also comes with its fair share of surprises. In Ghana, culture is deeply woven into language, greetings, food, community life, and even time management. Without guidance, simple things like navigating traditional markets, understanding hospitality, or even responding to a friendly “Akwaaba” or “Oobake” (welcome) – can feel overwhelming.

Cultural orientation bridges this gap. It equips you with the tools to not just “get by” in Ghana, but to thrive. With proper orientation, you’ll:

Feel more confident in daily interactions.

Appreciate traditions such as festivals, naming ceremonies, and family gatherings.

Understand local values that place community and respect at the centre of life.

Avoid common misunderstandings that might cause discomfort or isolation.

Language: The Heartbeat of Connection

Nothing says immersion quite like learning a local language. In Ghana, Twi is widely spoken, and even a few words can open doors. Imagine walking into a shop and greeting in Twi—immediately, barriers drop, and you’re welcomed as more than a visitor. Language lessons don’t just improve communication; they build deeper bonds with people and foster a sense of belonging.

Experiencing Ghana Beyond the Surface

Tourist attractions, restaurants, and nightlife are only the beginning. Cultural orientation helps you experience Ghana as Ghanaians do through shared meals, lively conversations, and communal life. It means knowing how to greet elders respectfully, enjoying fufu without hesitation, or understanding the rhythm of highlife music on a night out. These moments transform your stay from a trip into a life-changing experience.

Why Megbo Afe is Your Perfect Start

This is where ADRC’s Megbɔ Aƒe comes in. More than just a programme, it’s your bridge into Ghanaian life. Through tailored cultural orientation, language lessons, and transitional support, Megbo Afe ensures that you don’t just move to Ghana, you belong here. Whether you’re relocating, visiting for Detty December, or exploring your roots, ADRC gives you the guidance to feel at home.

Coming to Ghana should be more than ticking boxes on a travel list – it should be a reconnection, a rediscovery, and a joyful immersion. With Megbɔ Aƒe , you’ll have everything you need to embrace Ghana fully.

Good news for members of the African diaspora looking to invest in Ghana! President John Dramani Mahama has announced a landmark reform of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Act, scrapping the minimum foreign capital requirement that has long been a hurdle for many investors.

What Has Changed?

Previously, foreign investors—including diaspora entrepreneurs—were required to bring in at least $200,000 to $500,000 USD in stated capital before registering their businesses in Ghana. This rule, while designed to protect local businesses, often discouraged smaller-scale investors and aspiring returnees who simply wanted to start modest ventures.

With this reform, the minimum capital barrier would be removed, creating a more open and inclusive investment landscape. Diaspora investors will soon be able to register and launch businesses without being locked out by steep financial requirements.

Why This Matters for the Diaspora

For many in the African diaspora, the dream of building a business in Ghana has always been tied to more than just profit—it’s about reconnecting, contributing to development, and creating jobs. The previous high-cost barrier forced many to abandon or delay their plans, or to enter into unfavorable partnerships just to meet registration thresholds.

By eliminating this rule, Ghana is signaling that diaspora contributions are welcome at all scales, whether it’s a small café, tech startup, boutique farm, or a larger corporate venture.

Opportunities Ahead

Lower entry costs mean more flexibility to start small and scale gradually.

Broader sectors are now accessible—you’re not limited to high-capital industries.

Stronger inclusivity allows more entrepreneurs, especially women and youth in the diaspora, to invest with confidence.

African Diaspora Resource Centre’s Role

At African Diaspora Resource Centre, we recognize how much this reform means for our members. For years, we have listened to concerns about the steep $200,000–$500,000 requirement, which priced out many genuine diaspora investors. This new GIPC policy revision aligns with our vision: creating a welcoming, supportive environment for Africans abroad to return, invest, and thrive.

We will continue to:

Provide up-to-date guidance on investment opportunities.

Support members through the registration process.

Connect diaspora investors with reliable local partners and resources.

What You Should Do Next

If you’ve been holding back because of the high capital requirement, now is the time to revisit your plans. Ghana’s new investment climate will make it easier to establish your presence and contribute meaningfully to the country’s economy.
